The White House Kitchen Garden, Ready For Winter With Hoop Houses

First Lady's South Lawn vegetable plot will continue to grow through the cold months...
Wondering how the First Family's Thanksgiving menu featured fresh produce from First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden, despite chilly November weather? The 1,500 square-foot plot is a four-season garden, and grows vegetables all year thanks to hoop houses. Five hoop houses--aluminum hoops covered with plastic sheeting--have just been installed in the Kitchen Garden, protecting a wide variety of herbs, lettuces, spinach, Collard Greens, Swiss Chard, and root vegetables in their raised beds. The temperature in Washington, DC, has fluctuated wildly recently, getting up to a balmy 68 degrees last week, and dropping down to 34 degrees, thanks to driving wind and rain. But the hoop houses provide ample protection for the Presidential vegetables. (Above: Two of the hoop houses, beside the special beds in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, at right)

Hoop houses, also called high tunnels, are akin to temporary greenhouses, and used by home gardeners and farmers alike. They provide a low-cost and easy way to capture solar heat: The sun warms the interior through the covering, keeping the soil from freezing and allowing vegetables to thrive during cold months, so fresh produce can be had year-round. In 2009, hoop houses helped the Kitchen Garden continue to grow through two record-breaking blizzards, dubbed Snowmageddon I & II by locals. In 2010, the winter was milder, but still had snowfall, and the hoop houses worked swell then, too. (Above: The full view of the Kitchen Garden, with the five hoop houses that are currently installed)

There are 32 boxed beds in the Kitchen garden, and two berry patches. Vegetable beds that are not being used during the cold months have been seeded with a cover crop of rye, which provides nutrients for the soil, enriching it for next Spring's planting.

"What excites me every day is being able to go down to the First Lady's garden and being able to cook out of that. I mean it's just such an honor, number one, but two, as a chef, it's the best way to cook," Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass (l), the mastermind behind the First Lady's garden, said last week.

"I can go down and pick whatever looks the best and is the most ripe, and then bring it up here and be putting it on the plate in thirty minutes...there's always something new getting ready to be harvested in the garden, so that's just been great."

This year, the Kitchen Garden produced more than 2,600 pounds of vegetables, which are used for everything from the First Family's meals to State Dinner menus. In 2011, all the beds were fully boxed for the first time, a major change from 2010 when there were just six boxed beds. In June, Mrs. Obama installed a special Three Sisters garden, which utilized traditional Native American planting techniques. Beets were planted in the Kitchen Garden for the first time ever during the March 2011 Spring Planting.

About one third of the Kitchen Garden vegetables are donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a DC social services agency that provides daily healthy meals for the needy. (Above: An aerial view of Mrs. Obama harvesting the Kitchen Garden for Fall on October 5, joined by student helpers from Bancroft and Tubman Elementary Schools)

The White House Beehive, located adjacent to the Kitchen Garden, is now dormant for the winter, but in 2011 produced about 234 pounds of honey, according to an aide.

The First Lady's book about her Kitchen Garden, "American Grown," will be released in April of 2012. (Above: The Kitchen Garden layout for 2011)

What If The Kitchen Garden Had Failed?

Never waste a crisis: Deputy Agriculture Secretary Kathleen Merrigan says that a South Lawn crop disaster might have been a good thing...

Washington Whispers reports that during a Monday event about sustainable farming held at the U.S. Archives, the Deputy Agriculture Secretary (l) discussed the possibility of First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden failing:

"Merrigan, who manages the Agriculture Department's "Know your farmer, know your food" program, joked at an event last night that when Sam Kass, the assistant White House chef who tends the garden, expressed concern about the visibility of the first lady's garden and the chance that it might fail during the first year, she told him, "That would be great. ...Then people would understand the kinds of challenges that farmers face."

The Kitchen Garden is visible to the thousands of tourists who walk along the fence line of the South Lawn each month, and is kept in meticulous shape by the US Park Service, which manages the White House grounds. There's been no crop failure: The garden produced about 2,600 pounds of vegetables this year, according to the White House.

Merrigan, Washington Whispers pointed out, "has since applauded the First Lady's gardening success for setting an example for families on basic planting."

2011 Obama White House Thanksgiving Menu

First Family's feast includes turkey, ham, oyster & cornbread stuffing, five sides, and six kinds of pie...
President Obama and the First Family are celebrating Thanksgiving in the White House with a traditional menu starring turkey and six different kinds of pie, including Pumpkin Pie and Banana Cream Pie.  The Obamas will share their Thanksgiving with unidentified “friends, family and staff,” according to the White House.  The feast will be created with bounty from First Lady Obama's Kitchen Garden, according to assistant chef Sam Kass. Honey from the White House Beehive will also be used for the dishes. (Above: At Wednesday's Turkey Pardoning Ceremony, Malia pets Liberty as the President and Sasha look on)

"Like millions of Americans, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and I will spend the day eating great food, watching a little football, and reflecting on how truly lucky we truly are," President Obama said today.

In addition to turkey, the Thanksgiving table will be laden with ham, two kinds of stuffing, five side dishes including macaroni and cheese and green bean casserole, and dinner rolls. The show-stopping pies also include Apple, Cherry, Huckleberry, Sweet Potato, and Pumpkin. The President is a fanatic for pie, and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses has said that Banana Cream Pie is his favorite.  Yosses' Apple Pie recipe is here.

Like many Americans, the First Family enjoys the same Thanksgiving menu each year, and the 2011 menu is identical to the the 2010 menu the White House issued, as well as to the 2009 menu, minus the words "honey baked" in front of "ham."

In an annual Thanksgiving tradition, President Obama made calls to US military service members this morning, at around 9:00 AM ET from the Oval Office. The President's weekly address also thanked the troops, and today Mrs. Obama sent out an e-mail asking Americans to join the Joining Forces/USO "Thanks From Everywhere" campaign. (Above: The President made his calls to troops from the Oval Office)

On Wednesday morning, President Obama granted a Thanksgiving pardon to turkey Liberty and his alternate Peace during the annual White House ceremony. In the afternoon, the First Family packed holiday grocery bags at a local food bank.

First Lady Michelle Obama Featured On EverydayHealth.com: "Eat Like The White House"

An "exclusive" interview with First Lady Michelle Obama was posted today on EverydayHealth.com as the website unveiled its Fall editorial feature, "Eat Like the White House Eats." The website claims 28 million visitors monthly, and Mrs. Obama begins her interview on healthy eating and the importance of the Let's Move! campaign by professing her love for French fries. The above photo compilation of Mrs. Obama and her favorite food is posted with the interview.

The web feature includes five recipes that are credited to the White House chefs, but three of these were NOT actually created by the white-jacketed folks working at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There's also a section on presidential snacks; President Obama's favorite snack, according to the website, is chocolate Smoked Salt Caramels.

As her interview begins, Mrs. Obama is asked her favorite food.

"This is an easy one — it’s French fries. I love them. And I’m not afraid to talk about it because it’s important that we realize that healthy eating doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing approach. Choosing a healthy diet isn’t about deprivation, it’s about balance. It’s about moderation. Like I tell my kids, as long as you eat fruits and vegetables at every meal, you’ll be okay if you have pizza or ice cream every once in a while. The problem is when the treats become the habits."

Mrs. Obama also offers some parental advice for getting children to try healthier foods.

"Give them some choice in the matter. Find nutritious recipes they like and build up from there. Garden with them. Take them grocery shopping. Get them involved in the kitchen."

The recipes...
As for the recipes: Three of the "Five Fresh Recipes From the White House Kitchen" that are posted online and credited to the White House chefs were actually created by the food editors at Better Homes and Gardens magazine to accompany Mrs. Obama's July cover story about the Kitchen Garden. These include the recipes for Sweet Potato Fries with Baby Tomato Ketchup, smashed Apple Jam, and Fruit Pockets. They're perfectly good and easy recipes, but the White House chefs did not create them.

A fourth recipe that's posted, for Turkey and Spinach Lasagna, was previously released by the White House, created by Executive Chef Cris Comerford for an appearance on The Martha Stewart Show. But the recipe is credited on EverydayHealth.com as a creation of Assistant Chef Sam Kass. There seems to be one new White House recipe, for "I Made It Myself" Pizza, which is a veggie-loaded pie. But the White House, as of this writing, has not yet confirmed if a White House chef actually created the recipe.

Above: A screengrab of the online feature, which also includes ten recipes "inspired" by the First Lady's White House Kitchen Garden, and a healthy eating quiz.

The press release for the feature notes that "In addition to the French fries indulgence admission, Michelle Obama also notes in the exclusive interview that healthy eating does not have to be an all or nothing approach and she encourages Everyday Health readers to remember that treats should not become the habit. She offers ideas on how to involve children in the process and provides insights into a typical Obama family dinner – a time she says helps her family be a bit healthier, with their eating and as a family."

Video: Nate Berkus Interviews First Lady Obama

First Lady discusses Let's Move! campaign, the importance of gardening for children, and praises America's chefs...
Nate Berkus
, host of NBC's The Nate Berkus Show, visited the White House during the October 5th Fall Harvest of First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden. In this video clip from the show that aired on Monday, Berkus interviews Mrs. Obama. They discuss the Let's Move! campaign, Mrs. Obama's efforts to change the palates of America's children, the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, and how the Kitchen Garden has inspired similar projects in schools and communities across the country. The special White House episode aired on Monday, and to date it is the best visit by a TV series. (Above: Mrs. Obama and Berkus during their interview)

"Our ultimate hope is that when kids participate in the growth of food they'll be more interested in using that food, and being more likely to try some new things," Mrs. Obama said. "And then that way you can slip in a little education...and they take pride and ownership in it."

Chefs Move to Schools is a Let's Move! component run by USDA that marries professional chefs to local schools to boost nutrition initiatives, and has become an important initiative.  3,700 chefs have now signed up to participate, according to Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass.

"The chefs in this country have stepped up in major ways," Mrs. Obama said.  "And many of them — I'm proud to say — have found it as a pathway to healthier living for themselves as well."

The White House chefs have adopted DC's Harriet Tubman Elementary School for Chefs Move. The collective 75-pound weight loss of three of the chefs made national headlines last week.

Berkus during his visit also got a special Kitchen Garden tour from Kass, and cooked soup in the kitchen with Executive Chef Cris Comerford (the video and recipe). "American Grown," Mrs. Obama's forthcoming book about the Kitchen Garden, will be released in April of 2012.

Does the Secret Service protect the Presidential vegetables?
Nate Berkus,
host of NBC's The Nate Berkus Show, visited the White House during the October 5th Fall Harvest of First Lady Michelle Obama's Kitchen Garden, and he got a special tour from Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass. Berkus also interviewed the First Lady and cooked soup in the kitchen with Executive Chef Cris Comerford (the recipe and video is here). The special White House episode aired on Monday, and to date it is the best visit by a TV series. (Above: Kass and Berkus in the Kitchen Garden)

There's an amusing moment near the end of the tour when Berkus asks if the Secret Service is involved with the garden.

"Does the Secret service protect these cabbages from rabbits and things like that?" Berkus asks.

"Yes, I hold them to task. If a bird gets a tomato, I'm all over them," Kass responds, laughing. "I'm just kidding. They have more important people to protect than our tomatoes."

Sam Kass Gives Kitchen Garden Tours For Local TV Affiliates

The White House on Tuesday rolled out the red carpet for anchors from ten local TV affiliates, who were invited for "Live at the White House," a day with special access to President Obama and top Administration officials, including Cabinet Secretaries, designed to tout the jobs bill. Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass gave each anchor a tour of First Lady Obama's Kitchen Garden. Jeremy Campbell of Fox 13 News, KSAZ in Tampa Bay, Florida, posted this video report. There are more below.

Fox News outlets have in general given Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign negative reviews since its launch in 2010. But the platinum White House treatment--which included the rare opportunity for a brief sit-down with President Obama, lunch, and an indoor tour of the White House--seems to have worked its magic: The report is glowing and enthusiastic.

WCCO-TV’s Amelia Santaniello, of the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis, Minnesota, posted this video of her tour with Kass, which included the Beehive. She said on screen that many people may not know about Mrs. Obama's globally famous garden.

"The White House gave me the chance to talk with the chef, and see a side of the South Lawn you might not know about," Santaniello said.

Anchor Brian Taff of WPVI TV, the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia, PA, didn't do a video report, instead posting the photo above, of his Kitchen Garden tour, as well as a host of other low-res photos taken inside the White House. Kass is visible at left in the white coat; Mrs. Obama's Press Secretary, Hannah August, is in the center.

White House Chefs Shed Excess Pounds, Inspired By First Lady Michelle Obama

Longtime kitchen vets change their ways: A collective 75 pounds lost to date...
UPDATE, Nov. 4: Chefs' weightloss story featured on 'Today' show
I was pretty surprised in July when White House Assistant Pastry Chef Susie Morrison first told me she'd lost 29 pounds, because she'd never looked like she was overweight. But apparently Morrison's chefs whites were camouflaging extra baggage; my older photos of her actually do show a big difference. Morrison is 44, and has been at the white House since 1995. She said she made changes to her eating habits and started running, inspired by First Lady Obama's personal habits and the Let's Move! campaign. In October, Morrison said she'd dropped one more pound, and was holding steady at a thirty-pound weight loss. (Above: Morrison looks very trim in this photo from Mrs. Obama's HealthierUS Schools reception in October; she's with Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses and wine steward Daniel Shanks)

Morrison had just finished giving a healthy cooking demonstration for school officials when she was discussing the vanished pounds. Since 2009, she's participated in many of the First Lady's nutrition education events, and the White House chefs have adopted DC's Harriet Tubman Elementary School as part of the Chefs Move to Schools initiative, so Morrison is literally teaching what Mrs. Obama is preaching.

It's had a personal impact. Over the last year, Morrison has become a devoted runner and just finished a 5K, right after the State Dinner for South Korea. She also bicycles and lifts weights.
Morrison now snacks on fruit instead of pastry scraps, she said, and is in general mindful of her diet. Being a professional sugar master, surrounded all day by cakes, cookies, the legendary White House pie, and loads of other treats, is a dangerous thing for the waistline, but Mrs. Obama's example has changed her ways, Morrison said.

Comerford and Collick shed pounds too...
Morrison isn't the only White House chef who has lost weight. A new AP story details other White House kitchen weightloss stories. A collective 75 pounds have been shed by Morrison, Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford, on staff since 1995, and Assistant Chef Adam Collick, a 25-year vet. (Collick, center, with Comerford, left, and Morrison in the White House kitchen)

The chefs work very long hours, and both Comerford and Collick added pounds over the years by tasting their way through thousands of White House menu creations, from the fanciest State Dinners to every day functions.

"We're preparing really good food so it's really very easy to just snack all the time," Comerford said.

Comerford, 47, and Collick, 46, were also caffeine addicts, inhaling loads of extra calories in energy drinks, soda, and for Collick, whipped cream and chocolate syrup-topped coffee. They're now avoiding that, drinking just two cups of coffee per day, plenty of water, and exercising, too. Mrs. Obama is their inspiration, they said.

Comerford has lost fifteen pounds, and said she wanted more stamina to keep up with her 10-year-old daughter, Danielle, a competitive gymnast, and to set an example with "smart food choices." The family sticks to a balanced diet of whole grains, low-fat proteins and plenty of vegetables but on the weekend all "enjoy a hamburger or equally indulgent meal." Comerford's husband is also a chef.

Collick has lost 30 pounds by cutting down on empty-calorie eating, and he limits desserts to a few times a week, he said. He also exercises for an hour most days.

Comerford has now made many TV appearances demonstrating nutritionally balanced meals, and speaking about the wonders of Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden, where the chefs get much of the produce that's used in the White House Kitchen. She's also teaching what Mrs. Obama is preaching. (Above: Compare this photo from last year with the photo above: The chefs look slimmer in the first photo. Assistant chef Tafari Campbell is at right)

Assistant White House Curator Lydia Tedrick is also included in the AP story; she's lost about 35 pounds in the last year, she said. She joined Weight Watchers and works out with her husband.

President Obama Gives Interviews To Local TV Anchors; Sam Kass & Lunch Sweeten The Deal

Today, reporters get special access during "Live at the White House"...
Update: Click here to watch some of the interviews with Kass
The White House is today rolling out the red carpet for local TV affiliates, giving nine anchors from 2012 battleground states a day of special access that includes on-air interviews with President Obama. "Live at the White House" is designed to give the President yet another chance to discuss how his $447 billion American Jobs Act, stalled by Congress, will benefit communities. The anchors will interview Cabinet Secretaries; tour First Lady Obama's Kitchen Garden with Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass; have lunch at the White House; and tour the interior before broadcasting from the South Lawn for their evening newscasts. (Kass, above)

The President will conduct his interviews beginning at 11:00 AM in the Cabinet Room. Each journalist will also get to ask Press Secretary Jay Carney a question during the daily press briefing.

The anchors will have lunch with Senior Advisor David Plouffe, and their on-camera tour of the State Floor inside the White House is with Curator William Allman. The Cabinet Secretaries being made available to discuss the President's jobs bill are Housing, Education, Homeland Security, and Transportation. Special risers have been built on the South Lawn for the evening broadcasts.

It's not uncommon for the White House to focus on specific branches of the media with dedicated events. For instance, last month, Mrs. Obama hosted her first-ever roundtable interview for reporters from digital outlets. Mrs. Obama will be in New Orleans for much of today, however. Kass, who oversees Mrs. Obama's South Lawn Kitchen Garden, has led many tours for reporters who don't regularly cover the White House.

Today's event is timed to coincide with the fact that November is sweeps month in the world of TV. The stations and their anchors are from Philadelphia, PA (WPVI, ABC, Brian Taff); Hampton Roads, VA (WAVY, NBC, Tom Schaad); Denver, CO (KUSA, NBC, Adele Arakawa); Minneapolis, Minn (WCCO, CBS, Amelia Santaniello); Houston, TX (KTRK, ABC, Dave Ward); Portland, OR (KGW, NBC, Tracy Barr); Omaha, NEB (KETV, ABC, Rob McCartney); Tampa, FLA (WTVT, Fox, Jeffrey Cambell); and Phoenix, AZ (KSAZ, Fox, John Hook).

Nikole Killion, representing Hearst Television, Inc., will also participate. Hearst owns 29 TV stations across the US.

Chef Mario Batali: President Obama Needs A Knife

The one-time White House guest chef weighs in on the President's track record...
New York celeb chef Mario Batali, who visited First Lady Michelle Obama at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in October of 2009 to film a White House episode of Iron Chef America: Superchef Battle, discussed President Obama during an appearance on CNN with Piers Morgan.

"Obama came in with a really great idea, and I love him, and I love what he represents, but he came into the knife fight without the knife," Batali said.

Batali needed a sharper knife during his Iron Chef White House battle: He and teammate Emeril Lagasse lost to White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and teammate Bobby Flay. The episode aired in January of 2010, and caused an outcry in the media because "stunt vegetables" were used for the filming of the competition part of the show, rather than the vegetables the chefs had been filmed plucking from the First Lady's Kitchen Garden. (Above: Batali is next to Mrs. Obama; from left is Flay, Comerford, host Alton Brown and Lagasse)

Michelle Obama, White House Chefs On "The Nate Berkus Show" In November

Design master has "exclusive interview" with First Lady...
First Lady Michelle Obama, Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass, and Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford will all be featured on NBC daytimer "The Nate Berkus Show" on Monday, Nov. 7, the production company announced today. It's the first time all have been on the show. Berkus is an interior designer beloved by Obama pal Oprah Winfrey, who produces the show, and he took his crew to film at the White House during the October 5th Fall Harvest of the Kitchen Garden, according to an East Wing spokesman. (Above: Mrs. Obama in action during the event)

Berkus has an "exclusive interview" about healthy eating with Mrs. Obama: "Nate joins the First Lady on the South Lawn for her only interview in daytime about how viewers can change the way their families eat – today!" notes the publicity announcement.

Berkus tours the White House Kitchen Garden with Kass, and then visits the kitchen for a lesson in healthy cooking from Comerford. It's part of the pre-launch for Mrs. Obama's forthcoming book, "American Grown."

The episode announcement has plenty of exclamation points:

"Nate makes a trip to the most recognized home in America to pay a visit to First Lady Michelle Obama in a daytime television exclusive! He joins the First Lady to celebrate the White House's "Fall Harvest Festival" and teach viewers how they can fill their homes, backyards and kitchens with healthy food for their families.

American Grown: Exclusive Details About Michelle Obama's New Kitchen Garden Book

Publisher promises First Lady will go on an "extensive author tour;" details on the massive advertising campaign, the ghostwriter, the photographer...
First Lady Michelle Obama's glossy forthcoming book about her Kitchen Garden, first announced last March, will be titled "American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools and Communities." It will be released on April 10, 2012, The Crown Publishing Group announced today, when releasing the cover photograph for the book. A different source from Crown has informed me about far more book details that have not yet been announced, including information about the author tour, the advertising campaign, and the professionals who assisted the First Lady in telling her story. (The cover, above)

In the book, Mrs. Obama will describe how daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, "were the catalysts for change for their family's eating behavior which inspired her national initiative to address childhood obesity and resulted in the idea to plant a vegetable garden on the South Lawn," according to Crown. The book will include recipes from the White House chefs, as well as resources on gardening and other food access projects.

Expected to be a bestseller, the book supports the messages of Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! initiative. The planned national advertising push will ensure that her childhood obesity campaign, which will be in its third year when the book is released, will have much renewed attention.

Crown is an imprint of Random House, Inc., and booksellers are being promised "an extensive author tour" in "markets to be decided" to support the book, as well as a massive advertising effort that will include extensive television, print and internet advertising, and a social media campaign. The book will be 256 pages long, and priced at $30 in the US market, according to my source.

To create her book, Mrs. Obama has had some of the best help available in the publishing business: Experienced Washington correspondent Lyric Winik served as ghostwriter. Winik is the go-to scribe for political memoirs after working with First Lady Laura Bush on her bestselling memoir "Spoken From the Heart" and with Sen. Scott Brown on his bestselling memoir "Against All Odds." Australian food/lifestyle lensman Quentin Bacon, in high demand by A-list chefs, photographed the project. (Above: Bacon at work with Mrs. Obama at the White House)

The ad campaign: "Perfect gift for Mother's Day"...and the East Wing's dress rehearsal
Crown is advising booksellers that Mrs. Obama's book is "the perfect gift for Mother's Day," thanks to the April publication date. The publisher, according to my source, is promising a "Major national television campaign" and a "National and regional NPR [National Public Radio] campaign," as well as "National review and feature attention." The advertising campaign will include announcement ads in the New York Times and Washington Post, and banner ads on major dot coms such as USAToday.com.

There will also be a "social networking campaign" on Twitter and Facebook, with "outreach" to "news, parenting, gardening and food blogs." The White House has been doing a dress rehearsal for this by establishing a new media presence on Twitter and Facebook for Mrs. Obama. The First Lady sent her first "official" Tweet last week, and last Monday she also hosted her first-ever round table at the White House for "digital media reporters." The East Wing also invited guests to the most recent Kitchen Garden Fall Harvest to participate in the first-ever Let's Move! Tweetup. That Harvest event is included in Mrs. Obama's book, the First Lady's Press Secretary, Hannah August, told me.

The ghostwriter...
Mrs. Obama's prose helper, Lyric Winik, doesn't have a food and gardening writing background, but she's an award-winning author who has written about politics for many outlets, including a regular stint at Parade, and pieces in the New York Times and The Daily Beast. Like Mrs. Obama, Winik is a Princeton graduate, and they seem to have had one year's overlap while at college. Mrs. Bush and Sen. Brown both praised Winik in their books, thanking her identically for helping "put my story into words."

"Lyric is a talented and beautiful writer who worked tirelessly..." Mrs. Bush wrote in her acknowledgments.

Mrs. Obama, President Obama, Sen. Brown, and Mrs. Bush are all represented by Bob Barnett, the legendary Washington power broker/agent who announced the First Lady's book deal last March 16th, after the Spring planting event in the Kitchen Garden. Barnett also represents Sarah Palin, Karl Rove, Tony Blair, both Clintons, and many, many others for their books.

More on Bacon...
An Australian based in New York, Bacon has photographed books for celebrity chefs Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse, Ina Garten, and loads of other chefs, as well as done endless editorial work for magazines. According to Bacon, his first visit to the White House to photograph Mrs. Obama was in March, on the day the book project was announced. He photographed Mrs. Obama for the cover on May 30th, when the temperature in Washington was hovering around 100 degrees. Bacon shot the White House beehive for the book in April, putting on special beekeeping coveralls to do so (above).

Bacon was also on hand to capture the action at the most recent Fall Harvest; thanks to the event being included in the book, Mrs. Obama sat down to have a garden-side picnic with her child helpers at the event, something she hadn't done since the Spring Harvest in June of 2009. Bacon and his two photographer assistants buzzed around, capturing the images.

The publisher describes Bacon's images: "The print edition will be a gorgeously illustrated four-color hardcover that includes stunning photographs of the White House garden and Mrs. Obama throughout the seasons, as well as other community and school gardens from around the country." (Above: Bacon in the Kitchen Garden during the most recent Fall Harvest with Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses)

Mrs. Obama "accepted no advance for the book and will donate all net or after-tax author proceeds to a charity or charities to be named later," according to Crown, which added that "Random House, Inc. will also make a donation to an appropriate charity to be named later."

Kitchen Garden Portrait: First Lady & First Dog Bo

Good boy, Bo: The tomato-loving First Dog is perfectly behaved as he sits for a portrait with his mistress, created as a gift for kids who write to the White House...
The White House has released an "official portrait" of First Lady Michelle Obama seated with First Dog Bo in her Kitchen Garden. It's the first formal "portrait" of Mrs. Obama in her signature project, though she's been photographed a-plenty by White House photographers and members of the media in the 1,500-square foot childrens' vegetable education showpiece at the bottom of the South Lawn.

Neither Bo nor anyone else in the First Family has previously had a "portrait" taken in the Kitchen Garden, but there has been one official White House photo released of President Obama walking through the crop rows (see below). The Bo portrait, Mrs. Obama told reporters on Monday, was created especially for kids who write to her.

"We get so many letters from kids, who want to hear about the garden, they want to see it, and they also want to see Bo," Mrs. Obama said. "Bo is really the most popular. So we decided to do this official picture that we could send to them when they write in."

A Portuguese Water Dog, Bo turned three on October 9th. Mrs. Obama has referred to Bo as "my son," and he loves to eat tomatoes, she has said. No such hijinks are going on in his portrait with his mistress, of course, which was created by White House photographer Lawrence Jackson, an East Wing spokesman told Obama Foodorama. The lovely image was achieved in just three tries, Mrs. Obama said.

"We want to have something a little more tangible than just a letter to give to kids, because often it's the visual thing that makes it real," Mrs. Obama said, adding that the kids' letters are "inspiring," and describe changes to their families' eating habits.

Bo also has his own White House baseball card (downloadable here). He's been memorialized in White House holiday cookies (and here he is with me).

President Obama had his photo taken in the Kitchen Garden on July 1, 2010, when he led a power walk through the pea stalks. On a scorching Washington afternoon, President Obama guided Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), through the lush crop rows after they met in the Oval Office. The jaunt came in advance of the Senate's vote on the child nutrition legislation that is a centerpiece of Mrs. Obama's Let's Move! campaign. The Senate later approved it by unanimous consent. (Above: Sen. Reid is behind the President, and VP Biden is in back)

Malia and Sasha...
Despite their absence from photos taken in the Kitchen Garden, daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, are crucial to the project. In her forthcoming book about the garden, which will be released in April of 2012, Mrs. Obama will describe how her girls "were the catalysts for change for their family's eating behavior which inspired her national initiative to address childhood obesity and resulted in the idea to plant a vegetable garden on the South Lawn," according to the publicity blurb from Crown Publishing Group.

In a March, 2009 interview with the New York Times, Mrs. Obama vowed that her daughters--and the President--would be on weed-pulling duty in the Kitchen Garden. Noted the Times:

"Virtually the entire Obama family, including the president, will pull weeds, “whether they like it or not,” Mrs. Obama said with a laugh. “Now Grandma, my mom, I don’t know.” Her mother, she said, will probably sit back and say: “Isn’t that lovely. You missed a spot.”

Thousands Tour White House Gardens; First Lady's Kitchen Garden Is Must-See For Visitors

Guests wait in long lines to see famous vegetables...
White House visitors on Saturday and Sunday got to see First Lady Obama's Kitchen Garden up close during the annual Fall Garden Tours. While I was there on Saturday, the line to view Mrs. Obama's signature project stretched straight across the center of the South Lawn, and people were more than willing to wait. They were among the thousands of people who tromped around the South Lawn under perfectly sunny skies. A tour booklet and photo placards placed around the South Lawn identified what visitors were looking at, which included trees planted by past Presidents; the area where President Obama held his "Beer Summit" in 2009; and the Rose Garden. But Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden seemed to be the most popular stop on the self-guided tour. (Above: The line to see Mrs. Obama's signature project)

Chief Horticulturalist Jim Adams greets the crowds...
Mrs. Obama last harvested the garden on Oct. 5, and bounty was used for Thursday's State Dinner, something Chief Horticulturalist Jim Adams, on duty while I was there, was mentioning to the guests as they stood behind metal barriers and looked at the 1,500 square-foot, four-season garden. (Above: Adams on duty by the garden)

Visitors had plenty of questions. Many wanted to know what was growing directly behind Adams in the photo, above: It's Hyacinth beans, a favorite of President Thomas Jefferson, Adams said.

"They're good to eat when young, but otherwise sour," Adams said. He added that the beans are grown primarily for ornamental reasons. He also pointed out that the two beds he stood in front of are both dedicated to Jefferson, and use seeds and seedlings from Jefferson's own vegetable garden at his plantation home, Monticello, in Virginia.

Many visitors, based on over-heard comments, were surprised to see the White House beehive, which sits near the Kitchen Garden. President Obama was off campus at a golf game on Saturday, and on Sunday, for part of the day, he was at the dedication ceremony with the First Family for the new Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. Stevie Wonder was among the musical acts that performed.

The Marine Corps Band played all day at the bottom of the South Lawn during the Fall tours. Guests were allowed on the grounds at timed intervals, but then allowed to stay as long as they liked.

Video: Chef Comerford Previews The State Dinner

A spotlight on locally sourced vegetables in a menu "conceived by" First Lady & Top Toque...
In a video filmed today in the very busy White House kitchen, Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford talks about tonight's menu for the State Dinner in honor of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea. The menu was "conceived by" First Lady Michelle Obama and Comerford, according to the White House. Click here for a full post about the menu. (Above: Comerford holds green and red lettuces from the Kitchen Garden, used in the second-course salad).

Comerford discusses local and regional sourcing for the ingredients--produce from Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden, Wagyu rib-eye steaks from an unnamed Texas cattle ranch--and gives a behind-the-scenes look at how she pulls together a lavish diplomatic event for more than 200 guests.

Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses is also in the video, and he talks about his decadent dessert, "Chocolate Malt Devils Food Layers." Click here for a post about the place settings and East Room decor. The full guest list is here and a video of guest arrivals is here.

2011 Kitchen Garden Fall Harvest Recipe: White House Grilled Garden Pizza

Garden-side picnic: From dirt to dining in under an hour...
This afternoon, First Lady Michelle Obama, clad in black slacks and an argyle top the color of autmn leaves, plucked jalapeno peppers and sweet potatoes in her 1,500 square-foot Kitchen Garden for the third annual Fall Harvest. She was joined under a cloudless Washington sky by excited 3rd grader Mia Mejia and fifth grader Sterling Zapapta. There were a couple of breaks to reassure the worried kids that both ants and worms are just part of life. (Above: Mrs. Obama in the jalapeno plants with the kids)

"We're going to wash all of this before we eat it," Mrs. Obama said. "That's why it doesn't matter if there are ants on them."

The rest of the garden was a beehive of activity as the kids and the White House chefs paired off to harvest the other vegetable beds, spending about half an hour in the crop rows. Then it was time for a late lunch. Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and the other White House chefs created the healthy garden-to-table treats at a prep table set up at the bottom of the South Lawn, which had a hot grill in action. On offer: White House Grilled Garden Pizza and freshly plucked salad.

Mrs. Obama sat at a picnic table covered in a red and white checked tablecloth to eat with five excited kids. (Above: Mrs. Obama demos the proper way to eat pizza)

"This young man is killing it," Mrs. Obama commented, chuckling, as she watched one of her young dining companions wolf down pizza.

Another child told Mrs. Obama that she usually dislikes tomatoes--then devoured her tomato-covered pizza.

All the vegetables used for the pizza were harvested from the garden today, including the eggplant, sweet potato, red pepper, and basil. The recipe will appear in Mrs. Obama's forthcoming book about the Kitchen Garden, which will be published in April of 2012. The rest of the bounty from today's harvest will be used at next week's State Dinner in honor of President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea, and donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a DC social services agency.

White House Grilled Garden Pizza

Ingredients
1 12-inch pizza dough; it's okay to use frozen dough

2 tbsp olive oil

1 eggplant, cut into coins, ½ inch thick

1 red pepper, sliced, ¼ inch thick

6 oz. tomato sauce, your favorite brand

6 oz. shredded mozzarella, lowfat

Salt and pepper to taste

Chopped fresh basil, for garnish

Method
1. Toss the vegetables in olive oil and salt and pepper. Grill until softened but still a bit crunchy. Set aside.

2. Flatten the pizza dough until about 1/8 inch thick. Brush with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Grill on both sides for about 2 minutes on each side.

4. Top with the tomato sauce, mozzarella and grilled vegetables.

5. Garnish with basil. Serve immediately.

*Serves four

The twenty kids on hand for today's harvest were from Washington, DC's Bancroft Elementary School and Harriet Tubman Elementary School, which have both previously participated in Mrs. Obama's Kitchen Garden events. The White House chefs have adopted Tubman as their own under Mrs. Obama's Chefs Move to Schools initiative. Also on hand today were about 18 adults invited to participate in the first-ever Let's Move! Tweetup.
